Wet Feet Hawaii had a fun party to celebrate their expansion for their store…more proof that stand up is here to stay. I’m not sure if it’s double the size but they took over the space next door and did a pretty quick build out.

I shot this video of Kevin Seid from Everpaddle at the Wet Feet Hawaii expansion party. I got a chance to try this for a couple waves out at Puena Point. It’s really light weight and the look and feel is very cool. I’m waiting to see what they come out with in smaller blade sizes since that’s my preference.

Surftech had the grand opening for their retail location on Queen Street a while back and for some reason it got buried in a list of posts. They had a first class party with awesome food, music, drinks and industry heavies.

I got an email from my friend Marshall Wells tonight with these pics and a question.
“Is this why they call the surf break ‘Turtles’?”

My friend Erik Berglihn from Starboard sent me this picture from a previous trip to Pattaya, Thailand to windsurf and SUP. He stepped on coral and I think a sea urchin and had to go to a Thailand hospital which is a whole story in itself. Check out the meds needed to make sure he didn’t get an infection.
Here are the results for the Stand Up division of the U.S. Coast Guard MALAMA KA MEA HO`OPAKELE CANOE REGATTA held last Nov. 2, 2008 courtesy of Tad Tucker and Y2Kanu.

I changed in my Xcel booties a while back for these 5 finger ones by Vibram. I did it because the sole is thicker and gives more protection against sea urchins and sharp rocks. The razor cuts in the sole also give excellent grip. Now that I’m used to the 5 toe feeling, other booties feels uncomfortable. They feel like putting a sock on your hand versus a glove. In this next video, Todd explains the proper design of a stand up paddle in more detail. The bottom line is, a paddle should have the right shape, blade angle and surface design to get maximum efficiency.

I’d almost rather get cut on the reef and get reef rash than have ‘Wana’ sea urchin stingers in my foot. I was surfing out at Kaiser’s a while back although I never go there normally. I went to meet a friend staying at the Hilton to let him try my stand up board but it was windy and choppy and he got frustrated. Since I was there, I decided to go surf at Kaiser’s. By Stuart Murray
Inoke Tuhukava and Stuart Murray will attempt what has never been tried before. To complete the 111km overnight ultra-marathon paddle down the Hawkesbury River on November 1-2 2008. Although this is an established paddle race called the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic this is the first time Stand Up Paddlers have applied to be a part of the race which raises funds for the Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation.

This was sent in by Erik who works with Starboard. I got a chance to spend some time with him on a recent trip to Thailand and have to say that he is a great guy. Very humble and gracious. I was supposed to go with them on this journey but ran out of time. Looks like I missed out. Here’s what he had to say on what looked like an awesome SUP session in Thailand.
I have been visiting Bangkok for about 3 weeks now, and together with locals I have explored the city and the surrounding areas. Back home in Norway, i just started SUP this summer and every time I went out in the ocean, boats approached and wanted to “save” me.

Tommy Chorman from www.freedomridingco.com sent this to me and I had to post it up. After watching this I know that I have no excuses not to get out in the water.
Todd talks about the importance of paddle design and the differences between SUP and other paddle sports. It’s all about efficiency in the water and doing it with the right paddles as Todd explains. He also shares paddling techniques and tips on choosing the right gear.

I think that a quiver of downwind boards is going to be preferable…at least for me and my lack of endurance and paddling skills. I just finished the Coast Guard race this morning which was basically just paddling. There was no wind except for maybe 2 gusts I felt but still under 10 mph. I caught a couple good runners but that was about it for me. Continue reading ‘Thoughts on Downwind SUP Stand Up Boards’
