Dear Friends,
It’s time again for a free clinic and board demo.
We are expecting a big turnout, so if you have a board, please bring your own and join the free clinic. If you are demoing boards, please don’t be greedy and limit your time per demo board to 10 minutes so everyone gets the chance to try different boards. We are planning to strictly enforce this rule and will remove offenders from the free demo.

I’ve had a few sessions on the Starboard 10′5″ Wide Point SUP and so far it turns and surfs pretty good for such a wide board. The conditions I rode this board in were small waves, chest high at the most. I haven’t had time to get out to the north shore lately and the south shore has been pretty small for winter surf. My first impression for this board is that it looks very slick with the paint job and sandwich construction.

Steve at Surftech had this really great photo of Bobby Ah Choy doing his version of stand up paddling (and sit down) in Waikiki. I love the wooden chair! I’m not sure what year this was but you can tell from the skyline and lack of buildings that it was a while ago.

This shot from the 2009 Molokai race does not show perfect form
but I am reaching pretty far forward
I started the technique series with the power phase as this is where I saw the quickest improvements when coaching. All the phases of the stroke have to work together smoothly for the stroke to be efficient and without good reach and catch, the stroke won’t be effective. Here’s a video of Scott McKercher giving us an overview on the Starboard Pro Wave SUP stand up paddle surfing board line. The video was shot over the Australian summer Matt Holden, Margareta Engstrom and their team got some really good action shots. This is one of the best productions for a product video we’ve seen so far.

Back in October 2010, Luke Evslin got into a really bad accident during the Molokai to Oahu 6 man canoe race. It happened at the beginning of the race and the escort boat’s propeller ran him over during the paddler change. I visited him recently at the Kamanu Composites factory and I’m glad to report the he’s recovering very well.

Despite the lingering threat of the Tsunami Warning the C4 Waterman Kalapaki Challenge presented by the Garden Isle Tri-fest achieved all its goals Saturday. A grass roots event designed to support the growing SUP community on Kauai and entice cross-over athletes from the triathlon walk-of-life; the twisted bow-tie race course was both challenging and fun.

Here are some “in-action” pictures of the Surftech 10′6″ Blacktip stand up paddle board. The Blacktip is a great all-around, family board and the kids absolutely love it. This is the next generation version of the original 9′0 Blacktip which was also a fun board but the main difference is that the 10′6″ can actually catch waves. For this version, Surftech made it longer and a bit more narrow. The board is still very stable.
