WPA National Race – by Connor Baxter:
The 2011 Wet feet WPA National Race was a super fun event. I flew over to Oahu from Maui on Friday and the event was on Saturday. The WPA – World Paddle Association – has a series of qualifying events for the Hennessey’s World Event in San Diego in September. An event I definitely want to compete in.

I like racing on unlimited boards with rudders. The rudder makes these long, straight tracking boards surprisingly nimble and fun in the bumps. I avoid using the rudder when trying to catch a bump as it creates extra drag. Once planing on the bump though, using the rudder can help to follow the bumps or change direction without noticeably slowing the glide. You can step back with one foot to lift the nose of the board while keeping the front foot on the rudder. On steeper bumps you want to step further back with both feet off the rudder to reduce the wetted surface and allow higher speeds. Continue reading ‘Fine Tuning the Rudder by Robert Stehlik’

This was sent to us by Chase Olivieri from C4 Waterman.
Wow! It’s hard to put in words everything that happened at the 2011 Teva Mountain Games. As the cheif social media guru, I had a blast running around the event site to see our team riders race down Gore Creek, friends at CKS run the huge demo pool we had set-up and relay content to our partners at the Vail Valley Foundation.

Here’s a preview of the 2011 Starboard Ace 14′ x 25″ SUP stand up paddle race board shaped by Brian Szymanski. As you’ll notice in the video, the Ace has really thick sides and has quite a lot of volume. I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet but the board looks fast.

Once again, the paddling mad scientist Robert Stehlik has come up with a new version of an on land stand up paddling trainer. This one is designed to work in conjunction with a SUP video game and folds up for easy storage. I think version 2 is better than version 1 but if you want to find out for yourself, stop by Blue Planet Surf on Ward Ave in Hawaii and give it a spin.
