Livio is a Brazilian who made Maui his home. He is one of the fastest SUP racers and a funny guy to hang out with. We ended up sitting next to each other on the red eye flight from LA to Orlando. We arrived in Orlando at 6 am and headed off to the Surf Expo demo day, which was a great event. Despite the sweltering heat and humidity, being outside and on the water was more fun than being inside the convention center all day at the Surf Expo for the next 3 days.

Turtle Bay to host the Stand Up World Series Finals
In all sports there are the proving grounds, the place where it all began and the place where it will always return to. For the world of ocean sports, Hawaii has long been regarded as ‘that place’: the birthplace of surfing and stand up paddling and the roots of surf culture as we know it.

Hot off the press is C4 Waterman’s 2013 SUP stand up paddle catalog. It actually reads like a magazine with interesting first person pieces from the C4 team. Get a glimpse into the minds of Brian Keaulana, Dave Parmenter and Todd Bradley while meeting their team of ambassadors. Oh, and check out the huge line of products. It turned out that our Blue Planet/ Evepaddle booth at Surf Expo was right next to the Starboard booth. We sell a lot of Starboards products at the Blue Planet Surf Shop so I went over to check out what’s new for next year. It was on Friday, the day before the Standup World tour event at Coco Beach and all the top teamriders were on hand to talk about what’s new. Here are the videos I was able to shoot at the Starboards booth with some of the world’s top stand up paddlers:

As I was leaving the finish, I ran into Scott Trudon who gave me some insight into his race experience at the 2012 Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Championships. Scott competed in the SUP 3-man division with teammates Mark Raaphorst and Junya McGurn. Mark is the mind and energy behind the SIC brand of race boards and these guys are in great shape. Scott told he he’s 54 years old but you would never be able to tell that when racing him because he’s still so darn fast and he’s still in top athletic shape.

I just got back from the Surf Expo in Orlando where we were showing our line of Blue Planet SUP boards. We had a great response and are now working on setting up distribution on the East coast, one step at a time. While at the show, I was able to check out what’s new at our vendors and other manufacturers and brands I had not heard of. I shot some video and this is the first one to get done editing. More to follow soon.

I caught up with Dave Kalama at the 2012 Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Championships. Dave was the SUP unlimited division runner up to Connor Baxter by 30 seconds. They battled back and forth the entire 30 something miles and it came down to the absolute finish where Connor won by a hundred yards or so.

I caught up with Connor Baxter, winner of the SUP unlimited division of the 2012 Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Championships and got his perspective on the race and how he won. It’s even more impressive because the previous week he had strep throat and was out of commission. Looks like the teens have taken over the race world and Connor is leading the way.
