If you are interested in learning how to do downwinders on Oahu or want to improve your bump riding skills and timing to go faster with less effort, please consider a private downwind coaching session on Oahu’s south shore with Robert Stehlik. The most common south shore run for experienced paddlers is the Hawaii Kai to Kaimana Beach (Waikiki) run.

The second day of the 2013 Stand Up World Series Finals at Turtle Bay was pretty crazy. The sprint races on day 2 were in north shore waves up to double overhead and pitching hard. I’m surprised that no one was badly injured. In retrospect, some of the racers probably would have been better off in some heats with 11-12′ gun shaped surfing SUP’s. Toward the finals, Kai Lenny took off on a bomb and caught his front edge and got pounded. If Kai Lenny was wiping out, we know the conditions would be crazy for everyone else. Here are some photos I took from day 1 of the 2013 Stand Up World Series Finals distance race that started at Turtle Bay and ended at Ali’i Beach Park in Haleiwa. The race started off with no wind but it picked up a little bit during the race. It still looked like a lot of paddling and not much bump riding. I saw Annabel Anderson on the beach and was a bit confused as to why she wasn’t paddling. Turns out that Annabel already won the overall #1 rank for the year so she was taking a break. 2013 RAINBOW SANDALS BATTLE OF THE PADDLE
Recap by Connor Baxter
The 2013 Battle of the Paddle – also known as the BOP was a fantastic and exciting event. Just like last year, they kicked it off with two morning heats to eliminate so many people in the finals. In each heat there were 60 plus people and they were taking half. So as I got ready for the first heat – I knew what I had to do. Since they were taking a lot of people I knew that I didn’t have to paddle my heart out – just as hard as I needed to, to make it through. Recap by Connor Baxter
The 2013 Water Warriors Event put on by Chuck Patterson, was by far one of the most brutal and exhausting races I have competed in so far this year. And – that is to put it mildly.

I finished my SUP surf session and a guy started asking me about the equipment I was using. After a minute or so I asked him, “Are you Mickey Munoz ?” to which he responded, “Yes!”
Since Mickey Munoz is legendary I pulled out my iphone and shot a quick interview. I first tried the stand up paddle on a rented 12′x26″ Mickey Munoz Surftech Softop board in Waikiki. I couldn’t stand for more than a few seconds. Times have surely changed and the equipment has gotten so much better. Continue reading ‘Interview with Mickey Munoz’

I caught up with Ed Wheeler at the 2013 Duke’s OceanFest where he raced his SIC Standamaran. Ed got his first test ride when I got mine a month or so ago and he was blown away by the glide and how much easier it is on the body. Judging from his recent race finishes, he’s getting the hang of it pretty quick. Continue reading ‘Ed Wheeler’s S.I.C. Standamaran Race SUP’
