I’ve been riding the Starboard K15 SUP board off and on and shot some video of it in action. First off, the K-15 is an interesting board. It’s not meant for surfing but it can actually surf small waves. The board has incredible glide, especially in flat water which makes it perfect for lakes and inland paddling. A while back I took it out to Old Man’s in Waikiki and caught swell. I’m saying swell because for the most part, the swell never broke into a wave. You’ll see what I’m talking about in the video I shot of Randy Lui-Kwan surfing it.

Riding that board was a hoot. I’ve always enjoyed surfing longboards and this one definitely is the longest I’ve ridden. First thing I noticed when paddling was the rolly feeling as I was not used to a rounded displacement hull. Once you get moving, though, you feel the glide. Feels likes it wants to go faster and faster and doesn’t want to stop. The coolest thing is when you catch a wave, if you can call it that as it doesn’t even need to break to ride it, is the initial feeling of acceleration as it picks up on the energy. Pedal the the metal. You almost need to brace yourself as the board shoots out under you. I’ve never felt that exhilarating burst of speed on any other board I’ve ridden, surfboard or sup. I guess it’s the closest thing to stand up surfing a canoe or kayak that I’ll ever get. And it stays with the wave energy until every ounce of undulating water beneath the board is gone. Totally cool.
