Killer Shark Devours Turtle in Hawaii Kai Waters
I got an email from my friend Marshall Wells tonight with these pics and a question.
“Is this why they call the surf break ‘Turtles’?”
Marshall got the pics from Lori Kimura and she got them from one of the boat captains at Sea Breeze Parasailing. This kinda freaks me out a bit because this is the area I paddle a lot in for downwind SUP runs. I think this may run on the KGMB9 news also because I saw Keahi Tucker in the recipient list of the email.
It catches the turtle again, not good for the turtle
Poor turtle didn’t stand a chance
Cool pics Evan. When we did our downwind run, I’d look around and see these huge turtles. After a while, being so far out and relatively alone, I thought I better not look around because I might not like what I see. Now I know why.
Tony – When I’m doing a SUP downwinder I get into a ‘zone’ where I have almost a tunnel vision. I try to break it because I can’t see more than 15 feet around me. This has caused me to get pounded by waves, etc. In a way it’s almost better bc I know I would just fall off if I saw a big shark.
Last time I saw you Evan you didn’t look at all like a turtle….well maybe a little..:)
Seriously..I don’t think we have all that much to worry about. The shark is doing what sharks do. Feeding on his natural prey. How many attacks have we heard of on SUP boards? I don’t think we look much like something they would confuse as edible. Not to say there is zero possibilty but I don’t worry about it.
Now if I was on a shortboard with arms and legs dangling….can you say fishing lure?
I’m absolutely terrified to go in the water, but my husband convinced me and I went scuba diving in Hawaii Kai just this last week…I don’t think I’ll be going back now. #i’machickenandiknowit
