Conditions look good for a downwinder again, so we will have two training groups again this Wednesday. We will meet the downwind group at 4:30 pm at Kahala. We will also have a coaching/ time trial group meeting at 5:30 pm at our regular meeting spot by the boat ramp in Hawaii Kai, where everyone is welcome to join (the tide is too low for a short course downwinder). Jeff and I decided that we don’t want to limit our training group to just the more advanced paddlers paddlers by only doing the downwinders, so we decided to have two training groups this Wednesday. Jeff will meet the downwind group at 4:30 pm at Kahala with his trailer (no changes for this group). Robert will meet the coaching/ time trial group at 5:30 pm at our regular meeting spot by the boat ramp in Hawaii Kai, where everyone is welcome to join. We finally have some wind again, so instead of the regular time trial we will do a Hawaii Kai to Kahala Run this Wednesday.
We are meeting at 4:30 PM at KAHALA Beach Park (official name is Waialae Beach Park), this is where we meet and where we will finish. We will leave some cars here and shuttle the boards to Portlock where we will start. The downwinders are for participants that have done at least one downwinder before. Please confirm if you want to join by sending an e-mail to blueplanetsurf@gmail.com.

If you are interested in learning how to do downwinders on Oahu or want to improve your bump riding skills and timing to go faster with less effort, please consider a private downwind coaching session on Oahu’s south shore with Robert Stehlik. The most common south shore run for experienced paddlers is the Hawaii Kai to Kaimana Beach (Waikiki) run.

I recently returned from a River trip through the Grand Canyon. It was truly a trip of a lifetime. I put together two videos documenting the trip. The first is video is the shorter one, showing just the most difficult rapid in the Grand Canyon, called Lava Falls. I went through the rapid with my Stand Up Paddleboard (note: I said with the board, not on the board ). My 14 year old niece, Emily Williams rowed through it on a big raft and may be the youngest girl to have rowed through Lava Falls rapid. Continue reading ‘Grand Canyon SUP River Trip – August 2013′

Jeff at C4 sent over these photos shot by Jeff Wathell of Mana Photography of their recent session at Makaha. Most people would think twice about SUP surfing waves this size but it’s nuts on a C4 Supsquatch with 7 riders. Looks like a much better use than racing. Lol. Here’s Jeff’s recap below.

Mark Raaphorst just sent over these videos of the SIC race boards and the evolution of SUP race board design. The first video was produced by Mike Waltze who did the SUP documentary we reviewed last year. He did a great job with this video. This is one of the most professional looking SUP videos I’ve seen.

If you ask anyone who has raced in the Molokai to Oahu race what the hardest part of the race was, the answer will most likely be: the last few miles. Continue reading ‘2012 Molokai to Oahu race coaching bootcamp by Robert Stehlik’

Here are some pictures of Kevin Seid SUP surfing at Jocko’s on Oahu’s North Shore. He rode one of the custom Everpaddle boards he shaped and designed specifically for the north shore of Oahu. The board is around 8′ but I’m not 100% sure on that. Set waves that day came in around double overhead.

Here are some pictures of my friend Kekoa Mau surfing at Maili Point. 10-25 foot NW swell hit Oahu and left 6-15 foot waves at Maili that day. This was the first day he tested the Tropical Blends Surf 8′1″ surfboard.
