Team “Love”, the three member SUP team of Leah Dawson, Bianca Valenti and Geodee Clark swept the competition in Surftech’s inaugural Women’s SUP Challenge held in conjunction with the ROXY Jam Cardiff. The relay style event featured a unique format that awarded team points based both on paddling speed as well as surf skills. Each team member was required to charge the shorebreak and paddle around an offshore buoy before riding a wave and passing the board and paddle to their fellow team member. Last month I interviewed Maui based shaper and surfer Mark Raaphorst, and he discussed the differences between the F14 and F16’s along with other boards being used for downwinder stand up paddling. I shared with him my experience using the F16 while doing a downwinder and how the board became faster when it filled with water. He also gave some really good insight into downwind racing. I learned a lot.

Format
Day two, round 2 top wave scores added to round 1 scores. Yesterday, I listed the average today is the total scores from all judges which was used to round off top 16 quarterfinalist. Each heat was an hour long.

Surftech is holding their inaugural Women’s SUP challenge this weekend in conjunction with the 2008 ROXY Jam Cardiff. The event takes a unique approach to the sport of SUP and will offer fun for both competitors and spectators alike. “Open to competitors, general surfers and stand up paddle surfers”, Comments Sander Nauenberg, Marketing Manager at Surftech “the challenge is meant to be a fun, team focused relay that showcases the versatility of both the sport and the respective surfers approaches.”

Werner Paddles has announced the introduction of two new Stand Up Paddles: The Werner Advantage and the Werner Carve. Both paddles will be available to ship beginning September 01, 2008.
