Here is an exclusive preview of StandUp Journal’s “Fall” issue sent to us by Clay Feeter, publisher of Stand Up Journal magazine.
The eye-opening spread features, “stuff you didn’t know about a guy we’ve all followed for years” type piece written by Maui’s Keith Holland.
The feature is on Buzzy Kerbox. He talks about early wild water adventures with Laird, and then their falling out as friends, and how they started to get along again.
Buzzy also hashes out his drive to stay in the mix during the ‘Bustin’ Down the Door’ generation on Oahu, having to compete against the photogenic Buttons and others on the North Shore… and Buzzy’s now multi-faceted sup stoke; he loves the distance paddling as much as the waves.
Grab your copy of the “Fall” issue as soon as it’s out.

Santa Cruz, Calif. (June 13, 2009) – With a light fog greeting them at dawn, the record number of racers packing New Brighton Beach at the 8th Annual Surftech Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race presented by CLIF Bar had little idea what was in store for them on the 12 mile course. Competitors discussed various course strategies while loading up on nutrition bars, gels and hydration provided by Jay Race Presenting Sponsor CLIF Bar. In 2008, Jay Race champion Chad Carvin of Laguna Hills, broke the course record in a time of 1:51:58. Would we see another course record set on this day? With Chad not able to come defend his title, would this be the year a local takes top honors once again? All questions would soon be answered. Stand-up paddle surfing may sound like a scene from a screwball comedy, but no one’s laughing in a sports and fitness industry that has hit the recession skids as hard as any other business.
SUP, as it’s called for short, looks exactly as it sounds: you stand on a large surfboard and propel yourself forward with a paddle. But, unlike traditional surfing, you don’t have to wait for the waves. In fact, SUP, which is wildly popular, can be done on lakes, rivers, pools or any sufficiently large body of water. “It’s completely blown up in the past five years and every spring it just blows up even more,” says Jim Brewer, 45, a painting contractor who, in October 2008 and in spite of everyone calling him nuts, opened Blueline Stand-Up Paddle Surf in Santa Barbara, Calif., the first fully dedicated SUP shop in the country. “We thought it was phasing out, but then we realized that it’s just beginning. It’s going mainstream.”
