2013 RAINBOW SANDALS BATTLE OF THE PADDLE

The 2013 Battle of the Paddle – also known as the BOP was a fantastic and exciting event. Just like last year, they kicked it off with two morning heats to eliminate so many people in the finals. In each heat there were 60 plus people and they were taking half. So as I got ready for the first heat – I knew what I had to do. Since they were taking a lot of people I knew that I didn’t have to paddle my heart out – just as hard as I needed to, to make it through. Where: We meet in the parking area on the opposite end of the Hawaii Kai Boat ramp, close to where the Molokai race finishes. We will start with some weekly coaching tips and stretches before hitting the water to do some drills and warm up for the time trial. The Huntington Beach Pro Grand Slam presented by Starboard saw unprecedented performances from the world’s best athletes in both surfing and racing, as over 20 nations congregated in Surf City USA for a historic event just south of the Pier.

Kai Lenny makes it two out of two wins in Surf City USA
After winning both the Surfing World Tour event and the World Series Sprints of the Huntington Beach Pro Grand Slam, Kai Lenny (Naish) once again turned it on to take second place behind Australia’s Jake Jensen in the long distance, giving him the well deserved overall title for the event.

Kai Lenny and Ke’ale Dorries secure convincing wins in the sprint racing
With a rising swell throughout the day, the World Series Sprints saw spectacular racing for both athletes and spectators alike, as the world’s best took on pounding surf to make it around the ‘M’ course to the finish. Drama was at a high, as clean up sets rifled through the course at times, providing a major show for the assembled crowds and spectators online. Kai Lenny puts on a flawless performance in Surf City USA
Kai Lenny (Naish) from Maui put together a flawless event campaign here in Huntington Beach to take the win at stop 3 on the 2013 Stand Up World Tour. Each round Kai put together high scoring heat after high scoring heat, with a climax in Round 4 where he posted a heat score total of 18.57, a near perfect score.

A full day of action here at Day 2 of the Huntington Beach Pro
It was a full day of action here at Day 2 of the Huntington Beach Pro, as the Main event got underway and a new swell turned up to make it a day to remember. Clean head high conditions rolled in for much of the day, as the World’s best took to the water to battle it out here in Surf City USA.

Felipe Hernandez wins the Trials here on Day 1 of the Huntington Beach Pro Grand Slam
Felipe Hernandez (Rogue) put on a dominant performance today in the Trials component of the Huntington Beach Pro Grand Slam presented by Starboard. Leading a strong field of Mexican contenders here in Surf CIty USA, Felipe consistently powered his way through the rounds to make it through to the Final. When it counted, Felipe pieced together a strong heat to take the win in the Trials on Day one of the Huntington Beach Pro.

I finished my SUP surf session and a guy started asking me about the equipment I was using. After a minute or so I asked him, “Are you Mickey Munoz ?” to which he responded, “Yes!”
Since Mickey Munoz is legendary I pulled out my iphone and shot a quick interview. I first tried the stand up paddle on a rented 12′x26″ Mickey Munoz Surftech Softop board in Waikiki.
