The best treatment I’ve come across when dealing with shoulder injuries is RICE. Rest – Ice – Compression – Elevation. Although I own a Game Ready system, I use Hyperice when on the go because it’s portable and simple to use. Shoulder Icing is one of the best ways to stay in action. Our shoulders can’t heal until the inflammation is gone and one of the most effective ways to battle inflammation is ice.

I saw Todd Bradley from C4 Waterman and he showed me the waterproof camera that he was using. It wasn’t a GoPro. It was a point and shoot Fuji XP80. Todd said that Dale Hope and some others turned him onto it and he liked it.

Welcome to another episode of Board Meeting. In this episode, Robert and I will talk about the GoPro Hero4 Session camera. The GoPro Hero4 Session is an excellent camera for use in the water. It is waterproof so you won’t need to use a housing like on the other GoPro models, and it also has good audio recording.

Check out my review of the full-face snorkel mask called “TheNice FreeBreath”. It is almost identical to the Easybreath mask from Tribord.

I recently got a couple of Hydro Flask steel vacuum insulated water bottles (40 oz and 64 oz). I’ll cut to the chase. These are the best insulated thermos bottles I’ve ever used. Continue reading ‘Hydro Flask Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Water Bottles’

Here’s a video review of a hydration pack that I have been using recently, the WilsonPac model from VestPac. The WilsonPac was designed specifically for watersports use and has a big pocket you can use to carry your cell phone, keys, etc.. The downside for me with this pack is that the reservoir is too small. Check out the video below. Continue reading ‘VestPac Hydration Pack’

I was so excited to get my own Virus International Crop Pants and V Neck Top. Evan has been raving about how his Virus Compression gear helps his body to “recover” after a hard SUP session. I wake up at 5 am each morning to work out for about 60- minutes. Since I’m scared of sharks, I stick to land based exercise. Sometimes I’ll do Beachbody workout videos and sometimes I’ll go on the elliptical machine. After having three children, it takes “a lot more working out” to get my body close to its same shape and form.

I recently picked up a pair of Hobie polarized sunglasses at the Battle of the Paddle 2009 in California and so far so good. Prior to using these sunglasses I used Sea Specs because they are polarized, light, have a neck strap and are fairly inexpensive. I think they cost me $50 or so and I got the Hobie’s on sale for $40.

I normally shy away from the word ‘best’ when talking about products but I have to say it for Watermans’ Applied Science Sunscreen. I’ve been searching high and low for a sunscreen that doesn’t run in the water and won’t give me eye styes. This is a review of sunscreen designed for your face, not for the body. I normally wear a long sleeve sun protective shirt to block the UV rays from my torso.

Here’s a short video I took of Joe Blair’s 9′8″ SUP custom board which he made for my friend Jeff and I ‘borrowed’ for a while. The board has a slightly pulled in nose, round pin tail and originally had three 4.5″ fins on the bottom. I’ve had pet peeve about the Blair boards that I’ve ridden. Although they surf amazing and are super stable, it takes a bit of getting used to due to the way it yaws side to side when paddling. After thinking about this, I decided to replace the middle fin with a 6” cutaway in the center fin and leave the 4.5″ side fins. I tried it at Diamond Head a few weeks ago and at Leftovers on the North Shore the following week and the difference was night and day.

Jeff leads us to Wet Feet’s fin center and showcases their various types of fins, fin setups, materials (fiberglass and plastic) and manufacturers. Notice the variety of fin designs for different purposes. He also mentions a butterfly type fin that is currently in production and will be out soon.

I just put on the C4 grip on my stand up paddle. My paddle is 78″ long and the blade is 8.5″. I have another one that’s 80″ long which I use for downwind paddles and when I let my friends use my other boards. I think I installed it wrong but it still works. I don’t know if I like the grip diameter being so big but it does make the paddle easier on my hands and add a lot of extra grip. I like that it’s a bright color which makes it easy to spot in the water if I drop it. The downside is that when it gets dirty it looks really dirty.

When I first started stand up paddle surfing I would hit the rails of the stand up board A LOT. I still hit it and have even taken chunks out of the rails. The carbon fiber stand up paddles are strong and easily dent and ding the epoxy boards. My friend’s board looks like a shark ate the rail. It is wasted almost the entire length of the rail. I gotta get a picture to post but I don’t think he’ll like that.
The first solution was to tape up the edge of the stand up paddle with electric tape. That works reasonably well but a hard hit and the gel coat comes off the rail. Then I tried ‘rim rubber’ which is made for kayak paddles. It looks like door jam material and you use Aqua Seal glue to make it stick. It looks and works great on kayak paddles because they are relatively flat on the blade. Continue reading ‘Save your rails on your stand up paddle surfboard with video’
