The DragonFly is Planet Sun’s new model for their topwater eyewear line. I use the Sunphibian model religiously when paddling SUP, OC-1 or Canoe. This is the newest model that has a detachable strap and wrap type frame. I wear these on the beach and also at my kid’s sport events. They are comfy and the lenses cut the glare.

I recently got a new OC paddle from C4 waterman. It’s a double bend shaft, all-carbon outrigger paddle with a Tahitian style blade that Todd Bradley designed with George Cronstadt.

I was at the Blue Planet Surf SUP Clinic and Demo Day held last Nov. 6, 2010 and got the chance to meet Doug Hopkins, product manager for Aquaglide Paddlesurf / Amundson Stand Up Paddle Boards, and the designer himself, John Amundson. They brought along some of their boards and one of them was the Amundson 12′6″ which I had the chance to try out a while back. The Amundson 12′6″ comes in two models, the TR and the TR-X. They are almost the same except the TR-X has a layer of carbon making it about 4 lbs lighter than the TR.

Todd Bradley sent us some clips of him riding the C4 12′6″ “Switchblade” stand up paddle board. The video is a bit long but it gives different angles of how the board performs in light winds. I’ve tried this board myself in surf and really liked it. I like the glide and in small waves the nose allows an easier re-entry into the reform of the wave. This makes catching small waves fun because of the challenge to carry the longest ride possible by connecting small bumps, similar to a downwinder. I have yet to try this on a Hawaii Kai run.

Planet Sun has some of the best UV protection products out on the market. I personally own and use the Sunphibian Polarized Sunglasses which is great on and off the water. The sun umbrellas are handy when I’m at my kid’s baseball, soccer and when sitting at a hot football game. Planet Sun UV-blocking travel umbrella. I got introduced to Planet Sun at the Ocean Expo we had on Oahu. John, the founder, was promoting his line of sun protection and it caught my eye. I picked up a bunch of stuff to test out and really liked it.

I first met Brian Szysmanski at the 2009 Battle of the Paddle in Dana Point but at that time the Starboard boards were under development and I couldn’t show off the prototypes. I had a chance to reconnect with Brian at the 2010 Battle of the Paddle Hawaii. These Starboard race boards have been out for a while now I got a chance to video a detailed overview of the boards from Brian himself.

I had the opportunity to check out the Quickblade tent at the 2010 Battle of the Paddle Hawaii. Jim Terrell, founder of Quickblade, showed me their latest racing paddle, the Quickblade Magic DSI 28. It has an interesting design where instead of having a flat paddle surface, the Magic DSI 28 has ‘dimples’ like a golf ball. This surface, according to Jim provides more ‘grip’ when paddling and may allow for a smaller blade.

Kevin Seid from Everpaddle showed me a couple of their SUP board accessories, the Everpaddle Deck bag and the Everpaddle Elastic Cord Netting. These are great options for touring, cruising or camping. The bag and net are light weight and look pretty durable. Kevin, the founder of Everpaddle is an avid SUP paddler and racer and has worked hard on his line of product for the past few years. I first met Kevin when he came out with a bamboo stand up paddle. These accessories round out his line of gear for SUP.

Here’s a preview of the new Surftech carbon paddle. They have a full carbon model and a carbon/fiberglass model. Both are really light and I was surprised how light the carbon/fiberglass version is. The largest blade size is 9.5″, a bit large for my personal taste but perfect for outrigger paddling. I ended up cutting one of these paddles down to 52″ and use it with my OC-1. I love it for OC-1. It weighs 15 oz which is lighter than my Apple iPad. Continue reading ‘Surftech San-O Carbon Stand Up Paddle’
