Livio is a Brazilian who made Maui his home. He is one of the fastest SUP racers and a funny guy to hang out with. We ended up sitting next to each other on the red eye flight from LA to Orlando. We arrived in Orlando at 6 am and headed off to the Surf Expo demo day, which was a great event. Despite the sweltering heat and humidity, being outside and on the water was more fun than being inside the convention center all day at the Surf Expo for the next 3 days.

Hot off the press is C4 Waterman’s 2013 SUP stand up paddle catalog. It actually reads like a magazine with interesting first person pieces from the C4 team. Get a glimpse into the minds of Brian Keaulana, Dave Parmenter and Todd Bradley while meeting their team of ambassadors. Oh, and check out the huge line of products. It turned out that our Blue Planet/ Evepaddle booth at Surf Expo was right next to the Starboard booth. We sell a lot of Starboards products at the Blue Planet Surf Shop so I went over to check out what’s new for next year. It was on Friday, the day before the Standup World tour event at Coco Beach and all the top teamriders were on hand to talk about what’s new. Here are the videos I was able to shoot at the Starboards booth with some of the world’s top stand up paddlers:

I just got back from the Surf Expo in Orlando where we were showing our line of Blue Planet SUP boards. We had a great response and are now working on setting up distribution on the East coast, one step at a time. While at the show, I was able to check out what’s new at our vendors and other manufacturers and brands I had not heard of. I shot some video and this is the first one to get done editing. More to follow soon.

Werner Paddles Introduces River Running SUP
Werner Paddles has added a river running specific stand up paddle (SUP) to their line. The Stinger has been designed from the ground up for the rigors of the whitewater environment. Werner has been handcrafting paddles in the US for over 45 years and has over 80% market share in the whitewater kayak market. They have taken this heritage and melded it with the sport of stand-up paddling to create the Stinger.

Mark Raaphorst just sent over these videos of the SIC race boards and the evolution of SUP race board design. The first video was produced by Mike Waltze who did the SUP documentary we reviewed last year. He did a great job with this video. This is one of the most professional looking SUP videos I’ve seen.

In June, I got the chance to visit the guys at VIRUS Action Sport Performance at their HQ in California. Ryan Rubiano and Sten Rasmussen graciously gave me a tour of their facilities as well as an extensive run down on their current product line-up. In March I hurt my back and shoulder. I had an inflamed disc that made me feel like I was crippled. To make it worse, I pulled my shoulder too. I was in desperate need of anything that could help me speed up my recovery. I’ve been using the Virus compression pants and top almost every single day since June and I’m convinced the product works for me. Continue reading ‘VIRUS Action Sport Performance Apparel’

I recently visited Joe Blair at his surf shack in Solana Beach, California. This was the first time I’ve been to his place and it was great because I took my boys and they got to learn a bit about surfboards and later paddled at Cardiff. In this video, Joe shares some of what’s new with his SUP surfboard designs. Continue reading ‘New SUP Design Tips from Joe Blair – Video’

I caught up with Meg Chun, co-owner of Kialoa Paddles, during the 2012 Quiksilver Waikiki Paddle Festival. She showed me some of their latest paddles and blade designs for outrigger canoe and SUP stand up paddling. Meg is a wealth of information and has been paddling for a very long time. As one of the original players in the SUP paddle market, it’s always interesting to hear what’s new and improved at Kialoa.

Here is Mark Raaphorst from Sandwich Island Composites (SIC) with a new prototype 9′4″ SUP stand up paddle surfboard. The board is expected to be available by the end of summer, 2012. This is a short board type SUP designed to be fast. Being that it’s a SIC, that shouldn’t be a problem. Continue reading ‘S.I.C. 9′4″ SUP Stand Up Paddle Surfboard’

Here is the latest SUP race board from S.I.C., the Bullet 17′4″ version 2. Late in 2011 Mark told me he wasn’t expecting to improve the Bullet 17 much for 2012 but I guess he changed his mind. Continue reading ‘S.I.C. Bullet 17′4″ Version 2 SUP Race Board’

I recently went on a trip to China to visit some of the manufacturers we work with. I took some video at our board factory and put together a short video showing how a Blue Planet veneer board is made, starting with the Aku computer shaping machine cutting the blank, the vacuum bagging process, inserts, finish, etc. Thanks to Evan Leong of standuppaddlesurf.net for shooting the parts on the beach:
