We get to see another board design at Wet Feet, a Bill Stewart 11′6″ step deck manufactured by Boardworks. One standing feature of this board is the step deck, which you’ll see on the video.
It has a double-wing pin tail, which can handle fast and steep waves like a long board. The board is typically designed for big guys — a thick 5 and 16th inch thick middle plus a tapered nose and tail.

We get a short preview of the Makai Softop 11 Ft Stand Up Paddle Surfboard from the guys at Wet Feet. As we see on the video, the board has a soft deck ideally for people who are concerned about landing on the board hard or want something that is family and user-friendly.
The performance is manageable for a board of this type. I think this is good as an entry-level board.

Dave Parmenter’s brief run-down on the new C4 waterman VORTICE XP Karel-built Carbon race board:
I took out the C4waterman VORTICE XP board, the CARBON 21-pounder. After paddling about 6 miles in light winds and flat small seas, I ended up with the following impressions:

This board surfs well as we learn from Jim of Tropical Blends Surf. He adds that he has had one of his longest nose rides on the Bernhardt 10′6″. The rocker is pretty much accentuated on this one to make it perform well on the waves.
There’s a double barrel on both sides but the board is relatively flat all the way. This board maintains a hard edge which Jim says is unusual for mass-produced boards.

I got an Infinity Surf custom quad for my birthday in November and so far have only been able to test it in small surf. I’ve been playing around with the fin configuration since there are 5 fin boxes and this board rocks!

Larry Froley, owner of California-based Gray Whale Trading Company (GWTC), is currently developing an all-wood Touring Stand Up Paddle Kit, which will be named the “Kaholo”. The board is still in the prototype stage, and although the first protoype is a 14’ board, Larry is considering lengthening it to 16’. According to Larry, at 14′ a stand up board will obviously be a cruiser and/or racer, and the 16′ should fill that niche even better.
The width is planned at 28″ regardless of the length. The board is likely to be offered in two volumes like Gray Whale’s paddleboards, with the standard volume being for paddlers over 190 to 200 lbs, and a lower volume for lighter paddlers.

Doug Lock talks about the Brian Caldwell 10′ stand up paddle surfboard and shows us around its shape and explains its dimensions. He says that the board is good at riding four to five foot waves, and mentions the new concept on its nose shape called the bottleneck concave. The all-around shape of the board helps it perform well as a long board for nose-riding and short board for tail-riding. Interesting.
This board is pretty light even though it’s hand-shaped, as you’ll see on the video.

Steve Boehne talks to us about the Infinity Surf’s ottertail blade stand up paddle. Steve explains that these type of blades are easier to use than the regular square-shaped blades and does not compromise power — something that is ideal for older folks who may be experiencing chronic body aches and pains.
The paddle shaft is laminated into the blade so that it cannot break apart or leak. Continue reading ‘Infinity Surf Shop’s otter blade stand up paddle – Video’

If you saw the post a while back for the stealth C4 Waterman stand up racing board you’ll notice the resemblance to the Vortice XP. Basically, that was the Vortice XP. I got a sneak peek and demo on Wednesday with Todd Bradley from C4. I’ve got 2 words for this board – Super Fast. When I visited Steve Boehne at Infinity Surf in Dana Point, California, I got a chance to see some interesting air vents that he installs in his custom epoxy boards. I got a short video of Steve explaining the vent to a customer, some inside info and shot some pictures up close. These are the actual vents he uses on the custom epoxy Ku Ku Hoe stand up paddle boards.

All this talk about hitting your rails and chipping the paint or dings can all be put to rest after you see this video. I was at Jim’s shop, Tropical Blends and got a great video of him showing how durable his production Angulo stand up paddle board is by hitting it with a wooden stick and jumping on it up and down. Even the customer tries a jump or 2. If you have concerns about durability you need to see this video.

Tropical Blends Surf has taken on the experimental process of finding new, more efficient paddle designs that also suits stand up paddle surfing best. We get to hear about the qualities of these paddles that veer away from the “traditional” bent-blade stand up paddles.
I find the new straight-blade design logical, as I hear it being explained, but let’s see how the general public sees this new paddle design. I guess it’s all part of the growth and development of stand up paddle surfing.
Watch the video and gather a whole different perspective on paddle design and dynamics.

Check out the Blane Chambers 10′0″ production stand up paddle surfboard, which according to Tropical Blends is designed more for surfing but still paddles well. The board is very light as you can see from the video. The rocker is also pretty much emphasized, which makes the board loose and match the waves.
