This is the board I’ve been talking to Blair about for probably the last 3 months or so. I told him that I wanted the board, first and foremost, to be fast. I need to be able to use it on bigger surf and when I want to get out of the way, I want to be able to paddle. I want to make sections so I don’t get pounded and get stuck on the inside.

This is a short video I took of Joe putting on the C4 Waterman paddle grip on my C4 XPR SUP paddle shaft. It will show you how the grip is installed. You might want to do it on your own shafts but if your hands are shaky, might as well try it on someone else’s. Watch how accurate Joe is with the installation, from the grip set-up, cutting the excess part and finishing it off scratch free.

The Super 12′6″ is a normal stand up board but it’s been rigged up so that it has a mast track that you can put a windsurf sail in the middle. It also has a retractable keel in the middle and all these different attachments. It’s really pretty cool.

Here’s a video interview of Todd Bradley introducing the latest from C4 Waterman, the 9′3″ Sub – Vector, shaped by Dave Parmenter and Brian Kelana. Todd demos here their current short board offering for stand up paddle surfing which he said took most of its features from Dave’s original board design called “stub vector”. It’s interesting to know that this short board can actually take on big guys of up to 240 lbs.

In follow up to my previous post, I was able to hook up with Joe Blair for an interview on his all new 12’6″ race board. He shared his philosophies on why the board works, why it’s so different than others and all in the normal Blair style. Check out the interview and hear more of his thoughts.

Here’s part 2 of the video I shot at the Wet Feet expansion party. He goes a little more into his line of SUP boards and how his experience with windsurfing, kiteboards and surfboards influence his designs. Jimmy actually doesn’t ride some of the shapes before he sends them off to get molded. I questioned why he doesn’t ride his race board and he said that the best tow-in surfboard shapers don’t tow-in but can make great boards. I’ve found that the SUP shapers that SUP a lot seem to normally be on the leading edge in design but it’s an interesting perspective. Watch this video to see what Jimmy Lewis has to say about his SUP’s.

During my visit to Starboard headquarters Svein thought it would be a good idea for me to try and windsurf. I was excited but a bit reluctant. First off, there was no wind. Second, I have no windsurfing experience. He asked the resident pro instructor, Duncan to teach me so I decided to give it a shot. I was surprised that Duncan could even get the Super 12′6″ SUP to move in the sub 5 mph winds. Continue reading ‘Windsurfing the Starboard Super 12-6 SUP at Lake Bung Taco in Bangkok Thailand’

I ran into Jimmy Lewis at the Wet Feet expansion party a while back. I had my camera there and got this short video Q&A w/ him regarding his line of SUPs. Jimmy showed me his board models: the wave, the distance board and his “all-around” model. He shares how his 40 years of shaping boards has become his classic trademark in SUP…40 years, yikes…that’s longer than I’ve been alive. His secret to success is simple: make boards that are easy and fun to ride. Jimmy openly admits not having much interest in distance paddling but is stoked on his all-around boards.

After a long wait, I finally got my Joe Blair 12′6″ SUP race board. It’s way different than any of the other racing stand up boards that I’ve ridden or even seen. Actually, the closest one to this would probably be the Jimmy Lewis 12′6″. But the Jimmy Lewis 12′6″ is much thicker, the rails are different and the outline is different. Some of the other ones almost have a kayak type look, or paddleboard type look and feel. But to me, this one to me has more of a surfboard feel.

This is the 2nd part of the interview I did with Todd Bradley on the C4 Waterman XPR. I‘ve been hearing about pre-preg lately and wanted to know what it was so I asked Todd what exactly is a pre-preg carbon shaft? Pre-preg, which is short for pre-impregnated, as Todd explains, is a actually a process by which carbon fiber cloth is mixed with the exact ratio of adhesive and other materials needed for the optimum strength and weight proportion of the paddle. So, if you’re still wondering why pre-preg shafts look a lot sturdier? Watch this video and learn more from Todd.

In my recent interview with Hawaii born international shaper/surfer, Dennis Pang, I got a chance to know the guy who’s more than just your average shaper. Dennis talks about his SUP race creation for Tropical Blends – the 17’6” custom race board that Guy Pere won rode to win the 2009 Duke’s Oceanfest.

I’ve been using the prototype XPR racing stand up paddle for the past few months but had to keep it hush hush until now. I first took it out in a great south shore swell at Publics and fell in love with it. It felt like I got 10 to 20% more power than the C4 Pohaku 8.5″ without the extra strain that normally brings. It’s really smooth with the entry and exit and is very light. Todd can explain the fine points way better than I can so check out this video I shot of him explaining the 3 stage C4 XPR SUP paddle.

I shot this video of Kevin Seid from Everpaddle at the Wet Feet Hawaii expansion party. I got a chance to try this for a couple waves out at Puena Point. It’s really light weight and the look and feel is very cool. I’m waiting to see what they come out with in smaller blade sizes since that’s my preference.
