March 3, 2010 (Santa Cruz, CA) – The stage is set for the 2nd Annual “Surftech SUP Shootout at the Lane”, happening March 26th – 28th. It’s been a record El Nino winter with pumping surf slamming the California coast week after week. The result of all this wave action (other than broken relationships & loss of jobs) is the massive sand bar that’s developed along the cliffs at Steamer Lane!

Na Kama Kai is the brain child of Hawaii waterman Duane DeSoto. Duane is a professional longboarder and also competes in SUP stand up paddle competitions. He is the solo winner for the 2008 Molokai to Oahu race. Duane started Na Kama Kai and you can get more info at www.nakamakai.com. I finally got a chance to attend one of their ocean clinics and my kids had a blast. If you have kids, you should definitely take them to one or more of these, especially since they’re free. The clinics are held once a month and you can see the schedule on their site. Here are some pictures and a video I shot from the clinic we attended.

Joe Bark is one of the dominant shapers for paddleboards and stand up paddle race boards. On a recent trip to California I stopped by his factory and Joe gave me a quick tour. I found the address for the factory but it was a series of warehouse buildings, many without any signs. Just as I was going to call Joe to ask which one he was in, I saw a huge pile of foam. At that point, I knew I found the right place. Joe also spent some time showing the new boards he’s working on and how he tests their performance. I took a few pictures but the videos will give you a personal tour of the factory.

I know this is a promotional video but it does a great job at showing how excited people get when they first SUP and how accessible this sport is becoming. This is one of the best promotional videos I’ve seen so far. This was shot in Seattle, Washington.

I was fortunate to be able to attend this year’s Battle of the Paddle, not as a racer but as a spectator. The thought of cold water, unfamiliar territory, logistics of equipment, etc didn’t make me want to race. I had a great time shooting pics and video and got a chance to see a lot of the movers and shakers in the SUP industry. Then my camera battery died. Oh well. I know this took a while to post but here it is. I didn’t get that many pictures of the races because I was shooting video so if you want to see the races, please watch the videos.

Shawneen Schweitzer sent us this race recap of the 2009 Battle of the Paddle. Thanks Shaween!
Aloha;
Here is the report from the Battle of the Paddle. It was an incredible event, over three hundred competitors and lots of fun (and a bit of carnage). With what seemed like a thousand spectators on the beach, the SURF EXPO and the top SUP racers in the country here to compete in the 2009 Battle of the Paddle, you know it was a huge success.

Surftech hosted an awesome party at their Queen Street showroom just before the surf auction a couple months ago. Lots of famous surf industry people were there and the food was unreal, thanks to George Kam and friends. The meat and ribs were smoked all day and everyone had a blast. Here’s a short video showing the action and some pictures.
