With a series of low pressure systems hitting NW France this past week, there was no shortage of waves for the opening day of the event, as the Trials got underway in solid surf as we saw 8 worthy athletes earned their spots in the Main event.

After an epic stop for the Stand Up World Tour in Huntington Beach California, the Tour will now pick back up again in NW France, for the La Torche Pro France, presented by Naish and XXIX. This beautiful region of France has played host to the Stand Up World Tour for the last 2 years, and will once again open its arms to the World’s best at the tail end of the season, as the Title Race intensifies amongst the men, and a World Champion will be crowned for the Women.

The second day of the 2013 Stand Up World Series Finals at Turtle Bay was pretty crazy. The sprint races on day 2 were in north shore waves up to double overhead and pitching hard. I’m surprised that no one was badly injured. In retrospect, some of the racers probably would have been better off in some heats with 11-12′ gun shaped surfing SUP’s. Toward the finals, Kai Lenny took off on a bomb and caught his front edge and got pounded. If Kai Lenny was wiping out, we know the conditions would be crazy for everyone else. Here are some photos I took from day 1 of the 2013 Stand Up World Series Finals distance race that started at Turtle Bay and ended at Ali’i Beach Park in Haleiwa. The race started off with no wind but it picked up a little bit during the race. It still looked like a lot of paddling and not much bump riding. I saw Annabel Anderson on the beach and was a bit confused as to why she wasn’t paddling. Turns out that Annabel already won the overall #1 rank for the year so she was taking a break. Kai Lenny steps up to come from behind and take the Title
Kai Lenny (Naish) from Maui went into the Final day of competition behind: a disappointing 4th place finish in the long distance created even more of a challenge for him to defend his World Title, as Connor Baxter (Starboard), had the points advantage from the events leading into the Finals, as well as a 3rd place in the long distance race on Day 1.

2013 RAINBOW SANDALS BATTLE OF THE PADDLE
Recap by Connor Baxter
The 2013 Battle of the Paddle – also known as the BOP was a fantastic and exciting event. Just like last year, they kicked it off with two morning heats to eliminate so many people in the finals. In each heat there were 60 plus people and they were taking half. So as I got ready for the first heat – I knew what I had to do. Since they were taking a lot of people I knew that I didn’t have to paddle my heart out – just as hard as I needed to, to make it through.
