The European Cup Final is about to kick off this weekend at the Italia Surf Expo in Rome
After a spectacular World Series Opener in the heart of Barcelona in Spain, the European Cup then headed up north to the beautiful region of Sieravuori in Finland for stop number 2, as it all now culminates in Italy this weekend for the Surf Expo World SUP Challenge Roma.
Santa Severa is the location and is instantly recognizable by the 9th Century Medieval Castle that sits on its shores. This weekend, it transforms into this unique Surf Expo on the beach celebrating summer here in Europe in the best way possible by hosting the 2015 European Cup Finals and the biggest single surf festival in the country.
At night, the castle is lit up by the music venue on the beach, as the Italia Surf Expo becomes THE PLACE to be both day and night for one of the most entertaining weekends of the season. Join us for a weekend to remember at www.watermanleague.com and Facebook
It is not all care free summer fun, as for those competing in the European Cup Finals, their focus will be on the race course this weekend and coming out on top at this final stop in the hope of securing the prestigious European Cup Title. WIth Long Distance Racing scheduled to kick off at 1pm on Saturday and World Series Sprint Racing on Sunday, it will be a full weekend of action here at Italia Surf Expo.
Casper Steinfath (Naish) from Denmark put on a dominant performance in Finland, taking the victory in both long distance and sprints, which backed up an extremely credible 5th place finish in Barcelona, putting him atop the European Cup leaderboard.
However, right behind him is the local favorite, Leonard Nika (Starboard), who finished 2nd behind Casper in Finland and 4th, ahead of Casper in Barcelona keeping him well and truly within striking distance of the Viking.
Then it is the Hawaiian, 2014 European Cup Champion Zane Schweitzer (Starboard) who is currently sitting in 3rd place, looking to defend his Title and finish on a high here in Italy, with a 6th place in Barcelona and 3rd in Finland counting towards his overall result.
Behind these Top 3 battling it out for the Title, there is a wealth of talent stepping up to do battle here in Rome, from South Africa’s Dylan Frick (Starboard) and France’s Eric Terrien (Bic SUP) to Spain’s Roman Frejo (Starboard), Ireland’s Peter Kosinski and Italians Claudio Nika and Paulo Marconi among many others.
One thing is for sure, it will be a weekend to remember, as European Cup Champions are crowned and World Class racing will mark the close of an epic season of racing for Europe. Stay tuned for live updates, highlights and much more at www.watermanleague.com and on Facebook
In the women’s the competition is also intensifying as we anticipate a battle to the end for current European Rankings’ leader Celine Guesdon (Bic SUP) from France and #2, Ane Zulaika Aranburu (Bic SUP) from Spain. Celine finished 4th in Barcelona, but stepped up in Finland to take the win, both times just one spot ahead of Ane in an incredibly close battle. So it will definitely be a battle to remember here at the 2015 European Cup Finals in Italy.
However, behind them is the ever impressive Manca Notar (Naish) from Slovenia, who is coming off a 3rd place finish in Barcelona and looking faster than ever. HOwever, also watch out for the likes of Susak Molinero who had a strong finish here last year in Italy, but also Laura Quetglas from Spain, who is always a force to be reckoned with.
Once again, whoever comes out on top, it will be a weekend to remember as we close the 2015 European Cup in style at the Italia Surf Expo Roma. Make sure to stay tuned for live updates, highlights and much more at www.watermanleague.com and on Facebook
Flawless weather is forecast for this weekend’s Italia Surf Expo, with an added bonus of some surf on Sunday for the World Series Sprints, which coupled with the full capacity crowds down at the beach will make for one of the most exciting races of the season.
