at the 2010 Surftech Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race
June 20, 2010 (Santa Cruz, Ca) – With the 2010 Surftech Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race less than a week away, paddlers from Florida to Hawaii and beyond are gearing up to make the trip to Northern California to compete in this prestigious event. Locally paddlers gliding along outside the kelp beds have become a common site as they prepare themselves for the 12 mile endurance challenge.

June 14th, 2010, Santa Cruz, CA – Covewater Paddle Surf, the first dedicated stand-up paddleboard shop in Northern California, announced today that they will be the presenting sponsor of the Surftech Jay Moriarty Memorial Paddleboard Race taking place June 26th at New Brighton State Beach. Now in its ninth year, the open ocean event commemorates the great Santa Cruz Waterman Jay Moriarty. Proceeds benefit the Santa Cruz County Junior Lifeguard Programs specifically to purchase paddleboards and provide scholarships in Jay’s name.

Here’s a video of Todd Bradley explaining the canoe paddle stroke in a 6 man canoe trainer designed and built by Cline Mann. Todd goes through the different phases of the stroke in his first day coaching our 6 man canoe team. You can’t see from the video but there’s around a dozen men and women watching and learning. I know it’s not stand up paddling but the mechanics are still helpful to see.

Blue Planet Surf recently opened their new store at 540 Ward Avenue, Honolulu. I had a chance to drop by and take some pictures. The new shop is bigger than their Kapahulu store and allowed them to move their warehouse to the same location and have instant access to all the boards in their inventory. I think they’re running special sales right now so check them out if you’re in Oahu.

Here’s a quick video I shot with Carnet Williams giving me a demo of the Aquaglide aluminum adjustable length stand up paddle. The adjustable handle moves in 2 cm increments and secures in place with a snap-lock fitting.
