A weekend of fast twitch muscle fibers, horses(?), and nurturing our youth.
30 teams worth of volleyballers in simultaneous play, on 7 grass courts under happy Hawaiian sun. A performance suncare companies idea of a great day and the site of the 1st Annual Lanikai Invitational Volleyball Tournament. A great day indeed… some of most competitive in the sport turned out, impressing kids of all ages with perpetual plyometric play. The Mormaii 27 Mile Pailolo Express held on Sunday July 11th. Otherwise know as the Maui to Molokai Crossing. The first time I did this crossing I was 8 1/2 years old – and I windsurfed across it. But this time I did it – I WON FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!

The Mormaii Molokai Pailolo Express Race presented by Standup Paddle Magazine lived up to expectation Sunday as gusts as high as 20 knots delivered the goods for 28 Elite paddlers. Known for it’s “Lolo” (crazy) running current and wind, the 10:10 AM start gave way to a light mist at the line from Honolua Bay, Maui with a sense of calmness before heading straight into the rum line.

During one of our downwind runs, Todd Bradley showed me one of their new prototype stand up paddle boards, the 12′6″ “Switchblade”. Todd mentioned that the board will be in production at BoardWorks and will be out in stores soon.

Seven multi-sport events in the belly of the fabled Kualoa Ranch- ALL for charity. Goodness all around with Amy in superherocostume as the Statue of Liberty. HONOLULU (July 6, 2010) — The Molokai2Oahu World Championships of Paddleboarding, long considered to be the most prestigious paddleboard race in the world, has for the first time in its 14 year history sold out. With over 140 entries, this is the largest field in the history of the event and the first time the race has sold out, illustrating record international participation with particular growth in stand-up paddleboard (SUP) racing. Entries of both team and solo paddleboarders have signed up to tackle the formidable 32-mile Ka’iwi Channel that separates the islands of Molokai and Oahu, Hawaii.

It was a beautiful day for Da Hui’s annual 4th of July race. Here’s a recap from Robert Stehlik from Blue Planet Surf.
Going to the beautiful North Shore on Independence day for the Hui race has become somewhat of a tradition for our family. With clear water, blue skies and light tradewinds, the North Shore once again served up a beautiful day for the most popular paddleboard/ SUP race on Oahu (with the exception of this year’s Battle of the Paddle). The race results show a total of 478 finishers with of which 309 were stand up paddlers, an impressive turnout. The wind was very light in Honolulu but when we got closer to the start at Sunset beach, there were whitecaps and conditions looked good. The crew from Da Hui once again put together a great event.

Last week Shonny Vanlaningham placed second overall at the the XTERRA Eastern Championships in Richmond VA. A spectacular showdown ensued and continues among the top 3 PRO ladies of the sport- Shonny, Melanine McQuaid and “Swiss Miss”, Renata Bucher. I visited Luke Evslin at the Kamanu Composites Factory in Kailua on Kapa’a Quarry Road to learn more about the Pueo OC-1 and the basics of the canoe. Being a newbie to OC-1, I wanted to get the basics from someone with experience before testing everything out. I know some of this may be very basic for those with experience but for the newbie crowd, this will be very helpful and informative. This is OC-1 101.
