REI told its merchandise buyers last year that what it needed more than ever were new, gee-whiz products to take people’s minds off the recession. So it doubled down on such items as stand-up paddle boards and slackline kits for backyard tests of balance.
(CLIFF DESPEAUX / THE SEATTLE TIMES)
REI’s recession strategy in 2009, said Chief Executive Sally Jewell, was to “find things that would excite people and get them into the outdoors.”

I recently visited Mark Raaphorst at the S.I.C. headquarters in Maui and got to check out one of his latest creations, the S-16 Standamaran racing SUP stand up paddle board. The S-16 is surprisingly fast, especially going upwind. Upwind paddling is actually fun on this board. I shot some video of Mark explaining about the S-16 and got some footage from our downwind test run.

This is Gayle’s first time ever to do a Hawaii-Kai run and she already paddles like a pro as you’ll see in the video. Gayle also did a great job as the camera operator on a number of the other pocket coaching videos. Gayle is a Hawaii expatriate that lives in the mainland so she was super happy to be in the water in Hawaii. Click below for the video.

March 3, 2010 (Santa Cruz, CA) – The stage is set for the 2nd Annual “Surftech SUP Shootout at the Lane”, happening March 26th – 28th. It’s been a record El Nino winter with pumping surf slamming the California coast week after week. The result of all this wave action (other than broken relationships & loss of jobs) is the massive sand bar that’s developed along the cliffs at Steamer Lane!

This is a session that I went to a while back with Kekoa at Puena Point. It’s supposed to be huge, about 12’-18’ Hawaiian scale but then it turned out to be 3’-5’ Hawaiian scale. I guess it picked up that afternoon but at that time that we were there, the conditions were really nice: no winds, glassy water but the waves were a little smaller. So I ended up taking pictures and video shots of Kekoa while he was surfing. Check out this video that I got.
