For the first time ever, an inflatable stand up paddle (SUP) board has been acknowledged by the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) as a Top 5 finalist for Surfboard of the Year: the 12′6″ iSUP by C4 Waterman. C4, the original SUP company, is the only company in history to have a stand up paddle board nominated by SIMA.
First it was the 9′3″ SUB-VECTOR by Dave Parmenter and Brian Keaulana, nominated in 2009. In 2010, it’s the 12′6″ iSUP designed by Todd Bradley and Dave Parmenter that breaks the mold. Not only is the iSUP entirely inflatable but it’s design features and construction put it head and shoulders above any other inflatable on the market.
The 12′6 iSUP River Runner first grabbed attention in June during the TEVA Mountain Games inaugural SUP race. Darkhorse Noa Ginella (Hawaii), 16, a first time whitewater paddler, raced it to victory. Ginella edged out veteran whitewater river athletes on river-specific custom board designs and credits his success to the stability and efficiency of the board.
The 12-6 iSUP River Runner boasts an impressive pedigree and like all C4 iSUP inflatables, the plan shape, rocker and other technical specifications are based on winning hardboard designs.
“We are extremely humbled to be the only SUP manufacturer honored by our peers in the surf industry,” said C4 Waterman co-founder Todd Bradley. “This is the second time we’ve been nominated and that fact alone helps to validate our position as leaders and innovators in a category that has such a bright future in the industry.”
The 2010 Surfboard of the Year will be awarded to the surfboard model that features the most exciting design, appeal or innovation. Also nominated in the category are Dwart by Rusty, The Dominator by Firewire, The Dumpster Diver by Channel Islands Surfboards and Scorcher Series by Lost.
“On behalf of the SIMA Board of Directors, I would like to congratulate each SIMA Image Awards nominee on the accomplishment of being recognized by your industry peers for your hard work and innovation,” said Doug Palladini, SIMA President and VP of Marketing for Vans. “Image Awards is the perfect time to reflect on the excellence of our industry, celebrate the success of today and be inspired for the future. We look forward to honoring the nominees as well as the winners in February.”
The winners will be announced at the SIMA Image Awards ceremony, which will be held for the first time stateside on Thursday, February 3, 2011, at the House of Blues, Anaheim. The goal of the SIMA Image Awards is to identify the surf industry’s most influential companies and recognize them for their efforts to advance and grow the industry over the past year.
