Luke Evslin – Get Well Soon!

canoe-basics-and-the-kamanu-composites-pueo-oc1-with-luke-evslin-00

I was watching the live webcast of the Molokai Hoe race (OC Paddler TV did an awesome job with this) a couple weeks ago and heard the info on how Luke Evslin, one of the founders of Kamanu Composites got into an accident during the race in which the boat’s propeller ran into him. At the time, the announcers didn’t know his condition but since then we now know that he could have died. From the look of the wounds and the stories around the situation, it’s amazing he lived but I think the future has great things in store for Luke. How else can you explain it?

Planet Sun Sport Report 2010 XTERRA World Championships

Planet Sun Hawaii

The XTERRA World Championships is truly a magical thing. The vibe, the people, the power, the earth, the challenge all wrapped into a 1 mile swim, 20 mile bike and 7.5 mile run- in the lava and dirt. I will come out of character here to tell you that this “experience” is atop the world’s greatest sporting venues. The Olympics, Tour de France, Masters, etc.. just don’t have the same rock-n-roll. Quickblade Magic DSI 28 and Sweeper Paddles with Jim Terrell

quickblade-paddles-with-jim-terrell-6

I had the opportunity to check out the Quickblade tent at the 2010 Battle of the Paddle Hawaii. Jim Terrell, founder of Quickblade, showed me their latest racing paddle, the Quickblade Magic DSI 28. It has an interesting design where instead of having a flat paddle surface, the Magic DSI 28 has ‘dimples’ like a golf ball. This surface, according to Jim provides more ‘grip’ when paddling and may allow for a smaller blade.

2010 Cline Mann Memorial Paddleboard Race

2010-cline-mann-memorial-paddleboard-race-19

Here are some pictures I took from 2010 Cline Mann Race which was held a while back. This race was during the 6 man canoe regatta season which I participated in…kinda. I got sick a few weeks into the season and was laid out for a couple weeks. I was out of the water for almost a month. I only paddled in the first and last race of the season. I wish I could have been strong for the whole season.

everpaddle-deck-bag-and-elastic-cord-netting-06

Kevin Seid from Everpaddle showed me a couple of their SUP board accessories, the Everpaddle Deck bag and the Everpaddle Elastic Cord Netting. These are great options for touring, cruising or camping. The bag and net are light weight and look pretty durable. Kevin, the founder of Everpaddle is an avid SUP paddler and racer and has worked hard on his line of product for the past few years. I first met Kevin when he came out with a bamboo stand up paddle. These accessories round out his line of gear for SUP.

S.I.C. Bullet 17′4″ and S.I.C. F-16 V2 Comparison

sic-bullet-17-4-and-f-16-v2-comparison-3

After spending some time training and going on a few downwind runs with the S.I.C. Bullet 17′4″, I decided to shoot this video and share my thoughts on how the Bullet compares with the S.I.C. F-16 V2. Mark Raaphorst covered some of this in the video we shot with the Bullet earlier. I thought a visual where you can see the differences with the boards side by side would be helpful.
