Teva Mountain Games to Include Stand Up Paddling and IFSC Bouldering World Cup Returns

The Vail Valley Foundation is proud to announce that the 9th annual Teva Mountain Games, the nation’s largest outdoor adventure event, will return to Vail, Colorado June 3 – 6, 2010 and is open for registration. After record attendance in 2009, the Games will add two new Stand Up Paddling (SUP) competitions to the roster, along with the triumphant return of the IFSC Bouldering World Cup, which hosts world-renowned climbers at the only World Cup Bouldering event on U.S .soil.

The first of the new SUP events will be the raucous First Ascent SUP Surf Sprint presented by C4 Waterman where competitors paddle three miles down the icy runoff waters of Gore Creek, navigating drops, low bridges and class three rapids. The Sprint starts in East Vail and concludes in Vail Village. The second new SUP compteition, the First Ascent SUP Surf Cross presented by C4 Waterman, is mirrored after a classic boarder or skier cross, beginning at the Covered Bridge and ending 300 yards down-river at theInternational Bridge in Vail Village. Protective gear is encouraged as competitors will begin in a mass start and pilot through man-made and natural obstacles, including each other, in this exciting inaugural competition.

“The newly added Stand Up Paddling events are fantastic additions as they embody the spirit of the Games by combining the challenge of paddle sports with the soul of surfing,” said Michael Imhof, Vice President of Sales and Operations for the Vail Valley Foundation. “These additions keep Teva Mountain Games on the cutting edge of outdoor adventure sporting events in the country and we’re thrilled that First Ascent and C4 Waterman are taking the lead this year in partnering with us to present SUP.”

The Teva Mountain Games are the nation’s largest celebration of mountain sport, lifestyle and music featuring more than 2,000 top professional and amateur athletes from around the world competing in 25 disciplines for over $100,000 in prize money. This year’s sporting events include kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, road cycling, World Cup Bouldering, amateur climbing, fly-fishing, Stand Up Paddling, trail running and a half marathon.

In addition to competitive adventure sports, the Teva Mountain Games also include a photography competition, interactive exhibition and demo area, DockDog canine competitions, the Serac Adventure Film School, an interactive family area, free concerts and mountain lifestyle parties.
