At 5 feet 6 and 106 pounds, Connor Baxter is a little below average size for a 14-year-old.

But when it comes to ocean sports, he is way above average.

Baxter, a sophomore-to-be at King Kekaulike High on Maui, already has an impressive list of accomplishments in ocean sports that includes national and world championships in windsurfing.

His latest feat may be his greatest.

Robert Stehlik of Blue Planet Surf Recaps the Molokai-Oahu Paddleboard Race

Congratulations to Robert Stehlik, CEO of Blue Planet Surf for finishing 2nd in the SUP UNL M40-49 age group of the Molokai-Oahu Paddleboard Race last July 26, 2009. Here’s an update from Robert:

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I completed the Molokai channel crossing race on a Stand Up Surfboard, which was one of my big personal goals. Months of training and planning paid off and I finished the 32- mile course in a respectable time of 6hrs 15min and 7th overall of all Solo SUP paddlers. I have to thank my wife Sharon for her support -She came along on the escort boat and let me go on long training paddle runs for the last few months. Many thanks to Todd Bradley and Dave Parmenter for their coaching and getting me hooked on “riding bumps” and my long distance training partners Jeff Chang, Morgan Hoesterey and Aaron Napoleon. Carmel Waterman’s Club 1st Annual Dolphin Paddleboard Race

Dolphin race

First annual Dolphin Paddleboard Race, Carmel is just over a week away!

This 9 mile paddleboard Race honors the memories Ryan Field and Alex Robbins, two well-loved local surfers who left the lineup much too soon. The picturesque course takes paddlers on a technical, scenic tour of local landmarks as they race for prizes and glory, from the start at Carmel Beach, to Stillwater Cove, the legendary Ghost Tree, across the deep water Carmel Canyon to Point Lobos, Monastery Beach, Carmel River State Beach and finally back to the start. Da Hui July 4th SUP Race-video

The July 4th Da Hui race this year was a blast.  This is the first time I participated and was really impressed.  Everything was run like clockwork and very professional.  The conditions were ok with a light wind and occasional gust…better than the Olukai race but not enough to fly on.  I rode my F-14 and it was ok but I really could have used a full displacement F-18.  This was the first race for my brother and Randy Lui-Kwan.  It’s funny because I remember last year when Jeff Harris was prodding me to do the race and I kept telling him I wasn’t into racing.  This year I’m totally into it although I’m still not very fast.  Here are some pics and some video clips from the day.

Hawaii’s Kanesa Duncan Claims Women’s
Ekolu Kalama Takes Standup Honors

HONOLULU – (July 26, 2009) — For the eighth consecutive year, Australian Jamie Mitchell proved he’s light years and hard-earned miles ahead of his paddleboard peers, winning the 32-mile Rainbow Sandals Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race that is the unofficial world title of the sport. The toughest tidal conditions in years kept Mitchell from breaking the record he set in 2007, coming in 10 minutes slower today at four hours, 58 minutes and 25 seconds. His closest rival, Hawaii’s Brian Rocheleau, was more than 20 minutes behind at 5:20:53.

Tom “Pohaku” Stone’s Wooden “Kiko’o” Board-video

tom-stone-wooden-board-01.JPG

I met Tom “Pohaku” Stone at a party at Surftech Hawaii.  Pohaku is a legendary native Hawaiian waterman and wooden board shaper.  After he told me he was paddling the wood board, in a traditional Hawaiian malo from Molokai to Oahu (32 miles) I had to get it on video to share with everyone else. He showed me one of his boards, which I initially thought was a Paipo board. As it turns out, it was the Kiko’o 10 foot Koa wood board weighing in around 100 lbs. and is 3 inches thick.  I don’t know if I can carry the board, much less paddle it. San Clemente’s Rainbow Sandals Makes Donations to Hawaii Charities

Molokai Community Service Council & Na Kama Kai Receive Donations

HONOLULU – (July 23, 2009) – California businessman Jay Longley Jr., founder of Rainbow Sandals out of San Clemente, demonstrated that aloha comes from the Mainland, too, when he made financial and product donations to two worthy Hawai’i charities today: the Moloka’i Community Service Council and Na Kama Kai.

Dave Parmenter at Kaimana Beach-Part 1 – Video

dave-parmenter-at-kaimana-01.jpg

After a downwinder late last week, we were rinsing off our gear and saw Dave Parmenter.  Dave is a master shaper and co-founder in C4 Waterman.  He’s the guy that designs and shapes their boards.  Dave is one of the early pioneers of stand up paddle surfing and I found it interesting that he considers Todd Bradley his paddling coach for downwind and racing.  Dave’s paddling in the Molokai to Oahu race this weekend so I thought it would be a good idea to film a quick interview and get some tips.  Good thing I had my camera on my arm.

Molokai-Oahu Rainbow Sandals Paddleboard Race

This email was sent to us by Kanalu.

Aloha kakou a pau,

Asking you guys to come out and support the effort – read below. I attached our pledge form or you can go to www.hahawaii.org ; pass it on if you are inclined to do so.

In the way of Pohaku, he’s made the 11th hour decision to turn his paddle across the Ka Iwi Channel (Molokai Channel) as an unofficial entrant in the Rainbow Sandals Molokai to Oahu Paddle Board Race on July 26, 2009 (unofficial b/c the race organizers don’t have a wood board class). Now don’t get me wrong on the 11th hours stuff – only the brilliant idea to turn this into a fundraiser is new. He’ll be raising funds for Punana Leo o Kamakau, Kanalu (Pohahku’s non-profit), and Na Kama Kai (non-profit of Duane Desoto).
