I had the best time visiting Svein Rasmussen and crew at the Starboard Headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand. I was able to shoot a number of pictures and video and this is the first installment of my visit. In October, I had to go to the Philippines to handle some work meetings and another project that I’m working on but on the weekend I didn’t have anything planned. I ended up getting in touch with the Starboard crew and Svein, who owns Starboard and we started tossing around the idea of maybe flying over Thailand during the weekend. That’s what I ended up doing. Actually I was kinda scared a bit because after I already bought my tickets and was ready to go, a friend of mine who had just joined the U.S. National Guard told me that this is the most dangerous time for American tourists to travel to Thailand.

After finishing 4th at the recently concluded Molokai Paddleboard race, I had a chance to talk to Morgan Hoesterey, the only female paddler for the SUP solo unlimited division. Morgan said that her stint in this race was just to step up to the challenge; she never expected anything from it. This is the 2nd part of the interview I did with Todd Bradley on the C4 Waterman XPR. I‘ve been hearing about pre-preg lately and wanted to know what it was so I asked Todd what exactly is a pre-preg carbon shaft? Pre-preg, which is short for pre-impregnated, as Todd explains, is a actually a process by which carbon fiber cloth is mixed with the exact ratio of adhesive and other materials needed for the optimum strength and weight proportion of the paddle. So, if you’re still wondering why pre-preg shafts look a lot sturdier? Watch this video and learn more from Todd.

Another fun day at Ala Moana Beach Park. This is with some friends just fooling around on the inside area.

Here’s a short video I took of Joe Blair’s 9′8″ SUP custom board which he made for my friend Jeff and I ‘borrowed’ for a while. The board has a slightly pulled in nose, round pin tail and originally had three 4.5″ fins on the bottom. I’ve had pet peeve about the Blair boards that I’ve ridden. Although they surf amazing and are super stable, it takes a bit of getting used to due to the way it yaws side to side when paddling. After thinking about this, I decided to replace the middle fin with a 6” cutaway in the center fin and leave the 4.5″ side fins. I tried it at Diamond Head a few weeks ago and at Leftovers on the North Shore the following week and the difference was night and day.

This was sent in by David Powdrell. Here’s what he had to say on what looked like a fun session up in Bixby Ranch.
The photos were taken during the Santa Barbara Tea Fire. We decided to get out of town and get out of the smoke for 3 days by heading up to the Bixby Ranch. All the standup surfer photos are of Michael Lee, a long time Manhattan Beach surfer recently converted to standup surfer.

In my recent interview with Hawaii born international shaper/surfer, Dennis Pang, I got a chance to know the guy who’s more than just your average shaper. Dennis talks about his SUP race creation for Tropical Blends – the 17’6” custom race board that Guy Pere won rode to win the 2009 Duke’s Oceanfest.

Tommy Chorman from Freedom Riding Co. made this video of the SUP session in the Kaiwi Channel from a while back. I’m in the yellow long sleeve shirt and red hat and on the green F-15 SUP. Kainoa is also on the green F-15 and has no shirt. I think he may be allergic to shirts because I never see him wear one. Just kidding “Hammer”. He also told me to stop calling him “Hammer”. I’ve been using the prototype XPR racing stand up paddle for the past few months but had to keep it hush hush until now. I first took it out in a great south shore swell at Publics and fell in love with it. It felt like I got 10 to 20% more power than the C4 Pohaku 8.5″ without the extra strain that normally brings. It’s really smooth with the entry and exit and is very light. Todd can explain the fine points way better than I can so check out this video I shot of him explaining the 3 stage C4 XPR SUP paddle.

Wet Feet Hawaii had a fun party to celebrate their expansion for their store…more proof that stand up is here to stay. I’m not sure if it’s double the size but they took over the space next door and did a pretty quick build out.

I shot this video of Kevin Seid from Everpaddle at the Wet Feet Hawaii expansion party. I got a chance to try this for a couple waves out at Puena Point. It’s really light weight and the look and feel is very cool. I’m waiting to see what they come out with in smaller blade sizes since that’s my preference.

Surftech had the grand opening for their retail location on Queen Street a while back and for some reason it got buried in a list of posts. They had a first class party with awesome food, music, drinks and industry heavies.
